Do's & Don'ts of Dental Implant Recovery, Haslet, Texas

After a dentist performs a tooth extraction, they may recommend dental implants as a permanent solution to restore your smile and prevent other teeth from shifting. When working with the right oral surgeon, the process of getting custom dental implants is seamless. Nonetheless, follow the list of recovery do’s and don’ts noted below to ensure you heal quickly.

Take the day off.

Immediately following dental implant surgery, it’s common to experience minor swelling, discomfort, and some bleeding and the implant site. Allow your body to heal by taking the day off. Spend at least 24 hours relaxing on the couch or in bed. Use ice packs to manage swelling and over-the-counter pain medication to treat any discomfort.

Continue your oral hygiene routine.

Dental ImplantsWhile your mouth may be sensitive, keeping your teeth and gums bacteria-free is incredibly important for healing. As such, continue to embrace a healthy oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing twice a day. Be gentle around your dental implants and try warm salt water rinses as well to eliminate discomfort.

Smoke cigarettes.

Smoking slows healing and can increase the risk of dry socket and other issues related to your dental surgery. With this in mind, dentists encourage all patients to refrain from tobacco use for at least 72 hours after surgery.

Eat hard, crunchy foods.

In the days following your surgery, your teeth and gums will be sensitive as they get used to your implants. During this time, stick to a diet of soft foods like soup, mashed potatoes, smoothies, scrambled eggs, and pancakes. Eating hard, crunchy foods can lead to unnecessary discomfort and increased swelling and bleeding.
