Hardwood floors add charm to commercial buildings and last for decades. However, in order to keep them beautiful and functional, you must take proper care of them. Here are a few tips for caring for your commercial flooring in a high-traffic workplace.

Do:

Add pads to furniture.

Chairs, movable desks, and other furniture can eventually scratch your hardwood floors. To protect them from damage, affix felt pads to the legs of all items that get moved.

Use area rugs.

Place rugs in high-traffic areas, including entrances and hallways. They will protect the hardwood from scratches from people’s shoes.

Vacuum weekly.

Don’t:

Leave the curtains open.

When you have hardwood floors in your office, it’s important to keep your curtains and other window treatments closed as often as possible. This is because UV rays may cause fading and discoloration over time. Close all shades on weekends, or whenever the office isn’t in use.

Wait too long to clean a spill.

Whether it’s water or coffee, a liquid spill can penetrate the wood, leading to warping or discoloration. To prevent this, have your staff use paper towels to absorb spills immediately.

Add wax to your floors.

While you may be tempted to use wax to help your hardwood floors shine, you should avoid doing this. Wax can leave behind a sticky residue that’s difficult to remove. Hardwood refinishing will add a gleam to dull flooring with no residue.
