Asphalt driveways and parking lots can withstand heavy use and extreme weather for years if you have them sealed at the right time. However, the weather during installation and seal coating can impact the results. Here’s a look at how the weather could affect asphalt installation or repair work on your residential driveway or commercial lot.

How Humidity Can Impact Application

AsphaltSeal coating can help asphalt last longer and become less likely to crack and deteriorate. However, you shouldn't have the paving company apply the sealant when it's very humid outside. The less humidity in the air, the more absorbent the air will be, which means the coating will cure quicker. Therefore, professionals should apply it on days with low humidity, meaning under 30%. If it’s applied when humidity is between 30% and 80%, it will take longer to cure. If the humidity is extremely high, meaning above 80%, wait for a different day.

How Temperature Affect the Process

The hotter it is outside, the faster evaporation will occur. And though you want the outdoor temperature to be hot enough, which is usually above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, for the sealant to cure quickly and properly, you don't want it to be too hot. If the temperature is above 90 degrees outside, the top of the asphalt will dry too quickly, allowing the wet sealant to get trapped underneath it in an unstable layer. Though this layer will eventually dry, it won't last as long as it would have if it cured properly.

How Wind Can Help or Hinder the Process

A light breeze of 5 to 15 mph can help asphalt cure more quickly. However, if it's too windy—above 15 mph—wet sealant can blow on nearby cars or buildings, causing damage. Also, a very strong wind can cause the sealant to dry irregularly, creating a rough or pitted surface. Therefore, check the weather forecast a few days ahead of time before scheduling contractors to do the work.
