As a student driver, it will take time before you feel confident behind the wheel. Trying to remember what different road lines mean can be a source of confusion and frustration. To remain calm and help jog your memory, below are a few basic points to know about pavement markings motorists encounter every day.

3 Road Lines All Student Drivers Should Know

1. Double Yellow Line

When you travel down a two-way road, solid double yellow lines separate the flow of traffic. As a student driver, you might be tempted to cross the lines to make a left turn. This is against the law, as you could get hit by oncoming traffic. You’ll have to wait until you reach an intersection to change course. You cannot cross the yellow line to get around cars in front of you either.

2. Dashed Yellow Line

If you see a single, dashed yellow line, you should be able to cross it with precaution. If one of the solid double lines turns in to dashes, you can only pass if you are in the lane closest to the dashes. You have to complete the maneuver before the line turns solid again and only if you have a safe following distance with the car ahead and the lane of oncoming traffic is clear.

3. Solid White Line

This is often done in construction areas to control traffic flow. Solid white lines on road perimeters indicate where the shoulders are.
