Just like any large piece of machinery, it's normal for an HVAC system to be audible when it's running. However, aside from the clicking sound it makes when it starts or the soft hum of the running motor and moving fan blades, any significant noises are indicative of a problem. Here’s a closer look at some of the most common.

Abnormal HVAC Sounds

1. Clanking or Banging

When you hear something loudly clank or bang inside your HVAC system, it could be an issue with an internal fan. It may have gotten loose or unbalanced and is now striking different parts of the unit. Tightening up a loose screw or bolt may fix the problem, but there's also a chance you may need a replacement fan unit.

2. Rattling

HVACA faint rattling sound is usually a loose or broken component. If you hear it in the ducts, it's likely that something small accidentally made its way inside.

Often, it's something like a screw, toy, or pencil. If you can open up the register or grille, you may be able to see what's inside and remove it. If you don't see anything but still hear something, it may be deeper in the ducts and will need a professional’s attention.

3. Screeching or Grinding

A belt issue may cause high-pitched screeching or grinding. If one is loose, frayed, or misaligned, it could be scraping against something. Replacing it is usually the best bet since it will have worn down from the friction.

Aside from belts, a broken blower or heat pump could also be the culprit. A technician will assess the problem and get to the bottom of the mystery.
