Couples counseling, often also referred to as marriage counseling, is used by many to improve their relationships. Despite this, those who have never gone into couples counseling before may feel nervous about what to expect. By understanding a bit more about what this entails, you and your partner can have greater confidence in making this effort to improve your marriage.

Couples Counseling FAQ

What should I expect from a first visit?

During the initial visit, the therapist will meet with both partners (together, and then individually) to ask questions to better understand the unique issues affecting your relationship. You likely won’t receive advice right away — instead, your therapist will gather information to create a customized plan for how you can improve your relationship.

How long will we be in counseling?

couples counselingWhile the exact timeframe varies from couple to couple, most participate in consistent sessions for three to six months. Some can resolve their differences in less time, while others continue counseling for even longer to help keep their relationship on track.

Are these visits covered by insurance?

It depends. Couples counseling is covered by some insurance providers as part of their mental and behavioral health benefits. However, you will need to contact your insurance provider to see if such coverage is available as part of your plan.

When is counseling not a good idea?

While counseling can help repair many relationships, it is generally not recommended in cases of physical abuse or an ongoing affair. Individual therapy or a separation may be the better option for such circumstances.
