There comes a point in a person’s life when they no longer require the space that they used to. Larger homes can be expensive to keep up for a senior, and the number of rooms to clean may become too much work. Downsizing is an emotional step in one’s life, but thinking ahead will make the transition more fluid. Before calling the movers, follow the below tips to help your senior and make the experience more efficient.

3 Downsizing Tips for Seniors

1. Eliminate Rooms

If the current home is the house you grew up in, there may be several rooms left empty when all the kids moved out. One of the first steps of downsizing is going through these rooms and getting rid of everything that is non-essential. Some of the items can be passed along to relatives, while others can be donated. Create two piles, a yes pile, and a no pile. The items you are not keeping can be thrown out or donated to charity. If an item does not hold sentimental value and will not be useful in your next home, give it away so that you can save space when the movers arrive.

2. Save Attics, Garages, & Basements for Last

MoversSmaller rooms are easier to empty. Your parents or relatives have collected a lifetime of miscellaneous items, and some of the items in the attic, garage, or basement may have already been forgotten about. Leave these rooms for last. Your senior might want to explore each box, which will take time. Also, clearing smaller rooms first will give more space to unload the boxes as they are searched through.

3. Disperse Collections

Large collections of snow globes, spoons, antiques, or tools can be dispersed to friends and family. If a specific collection is set to go to one person, then this is the time to give it to that individual. If there are tools that’ll never be used again, talk to friends nearby, and see if they might want them.
