When it comes to pool maintenance, taking care of the pump tops the priority list. The pump keeps the pool clean by directing water through the filter. Here’s a quick rundown on the do’s and don’ts of pool pump maintenance to ensure its longevity.

Do:

Keep it clean.

Turn off the pool pump and leave it to cool off for 10 to 15 minutes. Then wipe down the surface of the motor with a damp cloth. Use a paintbrush or broom to clear away debris from the vents. Empty the basket and rinse it off with a hose.

Clean the motor every few months, but clear the basket weekly to prevent clogs in the system.

Lubricate the bearings.

Pool MaintenanceSome motors will come permanently lubricated, while others will need manual lubrication regularly. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for bearing lubrication, and only use an approved lubricant per their recommendations.

Don’t:

Allow it to get wet.

Get a cover to protect the pump’s motor from windblown rain. When you clean, never splash or spray the motor with water. Flooding the motor will cause permanent damage.

Obstruct the pump’s airflow.

Even if a shelter covers your pump, it still needs airflow to do its job. Clear out leaves and debris around the motor, and don’t plant anything close by the filter to prevent obstructions. Never cover the motor with plastic or airtight wrappings, which can lead to condensation that will corrode the bearings and damage the insulation.
