Your car’s brakes keep you safe on the road, so you want to keep them in top condition. Getting brake service is a part of auto maintenance that can’t be skipped. If you’re wondering when to schedule an appointment at an auto repair shop, here are several signs to keep an eye out for the next time you’re driving.

How to Tell When Your Car Needs Brake Service

1. Worn Pads

If you look through the spokes in your wheels, you may be able to see the brake pads. They should be at least ¼ inch thick. If they’re thinner, you risk delayed stops.

2. Screeching Noises

If you hear a squealing noise when you engage the brakes while driving, your pads have worn down to dangerous levels. The sound is created by a metal piece that lets you know when your pads need to be changed, and it should be loud enough to hear even when the windows are up. Continuing to drive when your brakes are squealing will wear down the pads completely, damaging your rotors and increasing your risk of accidents.

3. Delayed Stops

If your pedal doesn’t have regular resistance when you press it or you notice a pool of oil-like fluid under your car, you have a leak, which needs immediate attention.

4. Grinding Sounds

A grinding noise signals the pads have been worn beyond repair, causing the caliper and the brake disc to grind against each other when you try to stop. Driving without pads will scratch your rotors or even lock up your calipers. In this case, you’ll need to replace your brakes and resurface your rotors. If the damage is extensive, you may have to replace the calipers and the rotors along with the brakes.

5. Vibrating Feedback

If your car vibrates or shakes when you brake, your rotors could be damaged as a result of excessive levels of friction that created enough heat to misshape the metal. You’ll need to replace the rotors to get your brakes working properly again.
