As durable as they may seem, every asphalt driveway will eventually require repairs. Sooner or later, cracks will begin to form as a result of regular use and daily exposure to the elements. If you're vigilant and catch the problems while they're still small, they're easier to fix. However, you’ll need to take a more rigorous approach if these issues worsen. If you're curious about common driveway repair methods and how they work, here's what you need to know.

A Guide to Driveway Repair Techniques

Patching

Cracks and holes that are small and located within the first few inches of the surface can usually be fixed with patching, a technique that deals with each problem area individually. First, water and debris are removed from the depression. The depression is then filled with an asphalt compound which is later packed in, leveled, and smoothed over. Hairline cracks that are thinner than a quarter of an inch can usually be filled with a liquid compound.

Resurfacing

driveway repairWhen there are numerous cracks and depressions spread across the entire driveway, it's more time- and cost-efficient to have it resurfaced. During this driveway repair process, the first few inches of the driveway are removed. Then, any minor cracks or cavities underneath are patched. A new layer of asphalt is then applied, creating both a stronger and more attractive driveway surface. This results in the same brand-new look as a replacement, but without the extensive work.

Replacing

In the event of substantial, widespread cratering that compromises the structural integrity of the driveway, it's better to replace the entire surface. While more comprehensive and time-consuming than the two methods described above, replacement is sometimes necessary to ensure the safety of the surface. Although it's an investment, it'll last much longer than having it resurfaced. Also, if your driveway is around 20 years old, it’s better to have it replaced. Even if the surface looks okay, your driveway’s materials do have a limited shelf life that doesn't extend beyond two decades.
