Area rugs can add color to your interiors while protecting your flooring, and their size depends heavily upon the room dimensions and furniture layouts. This guide will teach you how to choose the right rug for specific living spaces.

Your Guide to Area Rug Sizing Based on Rooms

1. Living Room

Generally, 8-by-10 and 9-by-12 feet area rugs work best in living rooms because they’re large enough to cover a designated seating area but small enough to avoid overwhelming a room. However, this size can vary depending on the length of your couch. Your area rug should be the same length or longer than your sofa and serve as a frame for the center of the space.

2. Dining Room

3. Bedroom

Aim to put the rug perpendicularly so that it peeks out about two to three feet on both sides of the bed and stops right before each nightstand. Generally, 8-by-10 or 8-by-11 area rugs will highlight your bed while providing you with cushioning beneath your feet.

4. Hallway

Leave about six to eight inches of floor space around hallway area rugs so that the rug doesn’t completely cover the walkway. If your hallway is narrow, opt for a skinnier runner that will allow for more room on each side.
