Depending on the decibel level and duration of exposure, too loud of a sound can either temporarily or permanently damage cochlea hair cells. In some instances, the sound waves are so strong that they bend the hairs, causing them to flatten. This weakens your hearing, although your hearing gradually returns over the following hours. However, with incredibly loud or long-lasting sounds, the cells can die completely, resulting in permanent functional hearing loss. 

How to Prevent Damage

Avoiding all exposure to noise is impossible, but you can prevent permanent damage by taking precautionary measures. To avoid harming the cochlea, limit your time as much as possible around situations that result in noise levels over 70 decibels. Some activities that fall into this category include attending sporting events and concerts, mowing grass, using power tools, watching fireworks, and hunting.

At events where loud noise is expected, wear proper ear protection, like plugs or earmuffs. Check the decibel rating of each piece of gear to ensure it’s designed for the activity at hand. If you choose inappropriately rated protection, you’re still at risk of hearing loss.
