Since concrete is in a semi-liquid state when it is poured, or if a specific shape or texture is desired, a form must be used. There are a variety of forms available to concrete contractors. Learn more in the list below.

The Forms Used in Concrete Contracting

1. Wood

Wooden forms are common in concrete work and are useful when the job requires a lightweight form in an area that won’t be susceptible to termites. Wood is easily worked into the desired shape and size; it’s terrific for small projects. Plywood is often used in conjunction with wood as the sheath in the interior of the form.

2. Insulated Concrete

These are used primarily in the forming of the foundation of a building. They are made of an insulating material and placed around the slab to make a ‘sandwich’ with the poured concrete in the middle. They do not need to be removed and remain a part of the foundation.

3. Plastic

Plastic formworks are made of interlocking parts that are reusable, making them popular and economical with concrete contractors. They work best with simple, large shapes and are lightweight and easy to clean and move.

4. Wall Forms

5. Steel

Though heavier than wood, steel forms can be used hundreds of times and provide the best long-term use solution. These forms give a smooth finish to the concrete and do not absorb moisture or degrade like wood. Steel forms are easy to assemble and take apart.
