Maintaining your tires is essential for staying safe while out on the road. Doing so ensures that your tires maintain a proper amount of tread, and it reduces the likelihood of flat tires, spinouts, and other emergencies. However, it isn’t always easy to tell when you need new tires rather than repairs on your current ones. Below are several tips regarding when you should replace your tires.

A Guide to Securing Timely Tire Replacement

End of Lifespan

Although tires can last up to six years before needing a complete replacement, the lifespan of your tires is determined by the road conditions and the amount of driving that you expose them to. If your daily commute consists of highway driving for long distances, then you might need new tires in as little as three years. This will likely amount to about 12,000 to 15,000 miles of driving. Less frequent drivers may be able to wait five to six years (or 25,000 miles) before they need to purchase a new set.

Unexpected Damage

new tiresMany factors can damage your tires to varying degrees, detracting from the material’s lifespan and requiring you to replace them even earlier. For example, loose bits of metal can cut into the rubber and cause the tire to slowly deflate. Extreme temperatures can also have a damaging effect on the material. Heat causes it to soften and lose its shape while cold hardens the rubber until it develops cracks.

Worn Down Tread

Inspecting the condition of the tires at least once a year is the best way to determine your need for replacements. Keep an eye out for any visible marks and have the mechanics test them during routine maintenance. You could also place a penny upside down in one of the grooves. If you can see any part of Lincoln’s head, then the tread is too shallow and can’t be relied upon to maintain traction.
