Hernias are areas of the body where the intestines push through muscles or other weak spots due to physical strain or muscle weakness. Since the intestines contain harmful bacteria and should be protected to prevent bloodborne illness, they can be serious and should always be addressed by medical professionals. Here are three signs you have one.

What Are the Symptoms of a Hernia?

1. Visible Bulge

If you have an inguinal hernia, you may have a bulge protruding under your belly button area. Incisional hernias are where intestines are pushing through muscle near where an incision was made, and femoral hernias can cause a bulge near the groin and femoral artery. Anytime you have an unexplained, visible bulge on your skin, report the issue to your doctor.

2. Diarrhea or Constipation

herniaSince hernias can involve the intestine being displaced or pinched, it can alter the natural flow of stool. This can contribute to stomach troubles like diarrhea or constipation. If you find yourself heading to the bathroom frequently or having trouble when you try to go, talk with your medical provider instead of relying on over-the-counter medications. Ignoring this problem can make symptoms worse and put you at risk for an intestinal perforation, which could cause sepsis or a deadly infection.

3. Abdominal Pain

Often, people experience pain or burning sensations near hernia locations. This is especially true when bending over, coughing, or lifting. Sometimes, the area will feel heavy or create a dragging sensation, which can be uncomfortable. Always listen to your body, and if you suspect that something isn’t right, refer to a doctor or surgeon.
