Modern dentistry offers a host of options to improve your smile, whether you’ve sustained damage to your teeth or simply aren’t happy with the way your grin looks. Of these options, dental crowns and veneers are two of the most popular choices. But how do they differ, and how can you tell which will best suit your needs? To better weigh your options and move forward with the right choice, consult the guide below.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are small fixtures that are applied to the entire tooth. They are typically made from ceramic, metal, porcelain, or a combination of materials. These devices are often used after a root canal or when the majority of the tooth needs to be removed due to significant cavities.

To apply the crown, the dentist will first file away the top of the tooth so that only a small portion—large enough to support a post—is left. Next, they’ll take an impression of the core and your mouth to ensure a seamless fit. They’ll then apply a temporary crown to wear while the impression is at the laboratory. Once the permanent crown has been perfectly shaped to fit your mouth, it’s installed over the natural tooth’s core.

Veneers

dental crownsUnlike dental crowns, which are typically used as a preventative or restorative treatment, veneers are primarily used for cosmetic purposes. These devices are comprised of porcelain or composite resin and are applied directly to the top of the teeth to cover up stains, chips, cracks, and misalignment.

Before applying the veneer, your dentist will show you the different shades available to choose the right hue that is both bright and natural in appearance. Once you’ve chosen the right shade, the dentist will file down the existing tooth, make an impression, and send it off to the laboratory for creation. Once the veneer is ready, your dentist will bond and cure it to the natural tooth.
