Your swimming pool can provide hours of fun in the sun every summer. Once the swimming season comes to a close, taking the proper steps to winterize your pool will extend its lifespan and ensure you can continue to enjoy it in the future. Follow these tips to prepare for the cold weather ahead.

5 Steps for Winterizing Your Swimming Pool

1. Remove Debris

swimming poolSkim the pool’s surface and vacuum the inside, since debris left in the water will attract algae. Use a brush to clean the sides and floor. After you're done, clean out the pump baskets.

2. Adjust the Water Level

You don't want to drain your swimming pool entirely because leaving water in protects the lining, which can otherwise crack due to cold. Instead, lower the water level so that that water is four to six inches below the tile line to prevent freeze damage and overflow.

3. Balance the Chemistry

Use an at-home test kit to check the pH. You want to aim for a pH of 7.4 to 7.6. Adjust the chemicals as needed. Then shock and chlorinate your pool to get rid of bacteria. This helps prevent algae growth.

4. Drain Pool Lines

Burst pipes can cause costly damage. Drain the pump, filter, and heater before the first freeze. After the plumbing is drained, add pool-specific antifreeze to protect your system until spring.

5. Add a Cover

Once all the above steps are taken, add a sturdy, slip-proof cover to keep leaves and other debris from getting into the water. A hard-shell cover will also add safety by preventing animals and children from falling in.
