Allow me the pleasure of introducing Richard!  Richard is a tremendously positive, outgoing septuagenarian who has decided slowing down is not an option.  Richard came to Bombers just over a year ago looking to improve his general level of fitness after being prompted by his family.  Richard shows up each day with an excitement to learn and try new skills.  Even after a hip replacement, Richard has been determined to not let anything slow him down.  If you have the opportunity to drop-in on a 10:30am class during the week, take a minute and say “Hola, Como estas?”

How did you hear about CrossFit and what was your first experience?

I heard about CrossFit a few years ago from co-workers, then more recently from family CrossFit enthusiasts. My first experience with CrossFit (and with the white PVC barbell) was last year, a month after I retired.

When did you first come to Bombers CrossFit?

Oct 2018

How many days do you CrossFit?

Three days per week – I need recovery days during which I’ll workout but at a much lower intensity.

What classes do you normally take?

10:30 AM WOD session

What motivates you/keeps you coming back to Bombers CrossFit?

CrossFit’s varied, short, high-intensity WODs are an efficient means to overall fitness, which is important to me as a retiree. It’s a challenge. It’s a one-hour recharge assisted by a very friendly, positively motivated crew. The Bombers’ gym is convenient, well maintained. Coaches are knowledgeable, helpful, and encouraging. Coaches always scale WOD’s to be doable but still tough. And - I always feel great - after - the WOD.

What’s your favorite thing about the Dayton area?
Variety: seasonal climate, close to parks and to big cities, to sport and culture events

What accomplishment are you the proudest of (inside and outside of the gym)?

Inside gym – recovering leg coordination and strength after a hip replacement so I could compete in a 5K power walk in this summer’s National Senior Olympics

Outside – my Civil Service career at WPAFB supporting the USAF

After a hard workout, what is your favorite meal?

Protein shake

What are some of your interests outside of CrossFit?

Spanish, travel, piano, golf

What is one goal within the gym that you’re working on?

It was double-unders – but with the recent torment of burpees, I think performing a few, say 5, snappy ones would be an accomplishment

What impact has CrossFit had on your life/lifestyle/level of fitness?

CrossFit has been a great mental boost - reminds me of the camaraderie I had while running cross country in college. Physically, CrossFit highlights weaknesses in my strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance – while providing workouts to improve fitness and put brakes on aging. For example, CrossFit has helped correct my poor posture that resulted from decades-long desk jobs, sitting in front of a computer. Also, because of the variety of efforts required by WODs, I’m aware of what I can safely handle in various circumstances.

What advice would you give to a newbie?

Take technique seriously – listen to coaches – scale as needed to maintain good form, which avoids injury and importantly enables long-term progress
