If you're getting close to completing your CNA program and becoming a certified nursing assistant, it's time to start planning for your exam. There will be two parts: a written exam and a practical skills test. You'll get the best scores you can on both by preparing in advance using these do’s and don’ts.

Do:

Create a study guide.

A CNA program covers a lot of material. Condensing your notes and handouts allows you to create a compact guide that you can study as often as you need to. It also helps you identify which concepts you understand and which you aren't clear on. For this reason, the act of creating a study guide is effective at helping you remember the material.

Take practice exams.

CNA ProgramA practice exam does more than quiz you on the material. It also helps you get used to the question and answer formats you're likely to encounter during your test. Additionally, you can simulate taking the actual exam and time yourself to discover if there are areas you need to improve on before taking the exam.

Don't:

Cram the night before.

When you take in too much information too quickly, you're likely to forget most of it. Trying to fit in all your studying at the last minute doesn't give you a chance to absorb the material. A little cramming is reserved for reviewing what you already know, but to study effectively, you need to space out your study sessions over time, starting well before you finish your CNA training.

Neglect physical needs.

It's common to miss sleep before a big test, but this can hurt your concentration. If you have to choose between cramming more information or sleeping, it’s wise to choose the latter so you’re refreshed in the morning. Also, make sure to eat a filling, nutritious breakfast and drink plenty of water on the morning of the exam.
