If you can’t make it to the funeral service for a loved one, it doesn’t mean you can’t offer support for those you love in the wake of tragedy. Distance may pose a hurdle, but certainly not one that’s insurmountable. While the nature of support you can lend from a distance is different than if you were there, it is just as important. Here are three ways you can reach out across the distance and show support for those far away during a difficult time.

3 Tips for Consoling Grieving Loved Ones Far Away

1. Call & Visit When You Can

funeral serviceEven if you can’t be there right away, make plans to visit as soon as you can. In the meantime, be present for your grieving loved ones through phone calls and video chat. Send them texts to let them know you’re thinking of them and you’re there when they need to talk. Your phone is the best way to bridge the distance gap.

2. Send Flowers & Other Physical Displays of Support

Sending flowers is one of the most popular ways to show support and love. Include a card to express your condolences or a note to make your loved ones smile. Flowers serve as a physical reminder that you’re there, even if you’re far away. In addition to flowers, consider sending something to help your loved ones through this difficult time such as meals or a cleaning service.

3. Make a Donation

Make a donation towards the funeral service to help the family or put the money towards a charity the deceased would have supported. If they were an animal lover, make a donation to wildlife rescue or toward a local animal shelter in the deceased’s name. These small acts of support can make a large emotional impact.
