A clogged drain is an inconvenient nuisance that can prevent you from completing tasks such as washing the dishes or taking a shower. Luckily, this problem is almost always preventable. As a homeowner, there are a few basic steps you can take to ensure you aren’t caught off guard by a clogged kitchen sink or an overflowing toilet. Use this guide to prevent costly plumbing repairs.

How to Prevent Clogged Drains

1. Don’t Put Food Down the Sink

Generally, only small food particles that can be washed down with water should make it down your sink drain. Even if you have a garbage disposal, food waste is best reserved for a trash can. Fat, oils, and grease can quickly accumulate in your pipes and create a blockage. Pour these materials into a glass or plastic container and toss it in the trash. Also, fibrous skins from fruits and vegetables can get lodged on either your garbage disposal blades or attach to other scraps inside the plumbing, so don’t try to shove them down the sink either.

2. Use Drain Covers

3. Teach Kids Proper Maintenance

Many times, curious kids stuff toys in the toilet or kitchen sink, causing a clog that may be hard to dislodge. Teaching them not to play around these areas will prevent toys from being stuffed down plumbing fixtures. For example, make sure that they don’t take small toys into the bath with them to prevent them from going down the drain. Also, instruct them to only flush toilet paper—not paper towels and wet wipes.
