Of all the pests you might find wandering around your home, spiders may be the most unsettling. Even with Halloween on the horizon, you won’t want these critters disguising themselves among the home decor. If you live in North Carolina, keep an eye for these species in particular, so you know when to call for pest control.

3 Spiders to Look Out for in North Carolina

1. Cellar Spider

You might have heard of these spiders by the name “Daddy Long Legs,” but their official name is Pholcidae. Their slender, peanut-shaped bodies are flanked by long, thin legs, which can be up to two inches long. They make messy, cloud-like webs in the corners of dark, damp places, such as underground cellars, attics, or garages. If one of these spiders feels threatened—such as if you touch their web—you might see it shake its whole body rapidly.

2. House Spider

These spiders range in size from seven to 14mm, and they have brown bodies with a lighter-hued stripe down the center of their chest. While not dangerously venomous, this spider can leave irritating bites. You’ll most likely find their horizontal webs around brick walls or piles of wood.

3. Black Widow

This infamous spider is common in North Carolina. You can identify a black widow by their bulbous lower body and the hourglass-shaped marking on their stomach, which may be bright red. The species is so-named because female black widows often kill their partners after mating. They can also do serious harm to humans with a bite—from nausea to difficulty breathing — though they won’t bit unless they’re provoked.

They are most likely to be found in cramped, dim spots in your home, so take caution when entering these areas, and call a professional pest control services if you think they may be lurking.
