As part of the military tradition to honor the lives of those who have served, active members of the armed forces and certain veterans are eligible for special funeral services. These ceremonies are provided for eligible individuals free of charge and are performed by an honor guard detail from the military. Find out more about what these services entail below.

3 Facts to Know About Funeral Services for Military Personnel

1. Requirements

The military will provide traditional services for members of the armed forces who were on active duty at the time of death or in the selected reserve. They are also offered to veterans who have served on active duty and discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.

Veterans must have received at least one term of enlistment to be eligible for this honor. If you wish to have an honor guard present at your loved one’s service, you will be asked to provide their DD Form 214 or another qualifying discharge document.

2. Flag Presentation

funeral servicesDuring the ceremony, a minimum of two members of the military will perform the traditional folding of the flag. This revered tribute consists of 13 folds, each of which honors a different aspect of service. Once the folding has been completed, the flag will be presented to the next of kin. Many family members choose to display their loved ones’ flags in their homes to remember their life and service.

3. Playing of “Taps”

Each military funeral also features the playing of “Taps.” This moving song is typically played on the bugle, but because there are now very few buglers in the U.S., a recording may be used in some circumstances. “Taps” dates back to the Civil War when the tune would be played to signify bedtime for army troops.
