If you’re planning on attending a traditional Hawaiian lū‘au, you may be wondering what to wear. Since the night will be steeped in island tradition, you’ll want to dress the part. Even if you’re visiting from the mainland, donning festive attire will allow you to immerse yourself in the culture. When picking out an outfit for the evening, keep the following tips in mind.

How to Dress for a Hawaiian Lū‘au

1. Keep It Casual

Hawaiian lū‘au are casual affairs. Leave the slacks or cocktail dress in your suitcase and opt for shorts or a sundress instead. However, if you’re likely to get cold once the sun sets, bring a light jacket or cardigan. Finish the look with sandals. Since you’ll be alternating between sitting, standing, and dancing, you want to wear comfortable shoes, so skip the loafers or heels.

A Hawaiian lū‘au provides the perfect opportunity for donning aloha attire. For men, that means floral shirts, and for women, that typically means Hawaiian-style dresses. A floral shirt with a pair of shorts or a skirt is also appropriate attire for women. Opt for something you feel comfortable in because the lū‘au is supposed to be fun and relaxed.

3. Ditch (Most of) the Accessories

Forgo most accessories, including socks, belts, and fancy jewelry, when dressing up for the evening. Sunglasses are all you’ll need, as every guest should receive a lei upon arrival. Women who are feeling especially festive are encouraged to slip a flower behind one ear.
