No matter how long you intend to use your storage unit, a little organization helps make navigation easier. You’ll save hours spent moving boxes to find what you want or dealing with accidents and injuries. Consider the following tips for organizing your self-storage space quickly and easily.

How to Set Up a Storage Unit for Easy Use

1. Ditch the Boxes

Use clear plastic containers with sealable lids instead of cardboard boxes. Clear plastic containers protect your items from dust, insects, vermin, and the elements while also being easy to see inside. They stack well so you can utilize more vertical space.

2. Make Detailed Labels & a Master Contents List

Make two copies of this list—one for your home and one for the inside of the storage unit. If the space is not climate-controlled, laminate the list to prevent anything from happening to it.

3. Organize From Back to Front

Place items you don’t have an immediate need for in the back, such as family heirlooms or antique furniture. Keep seasonal items such as holiday decorations, summer clothing, and sports equipment in the middle or front of your storage unit. Use the front of your space for items you want quick access to, like home and garden equipment or tools.

4. Use Pallets

Help your belongings stay safe from moisture and dirt with pallets. Arrange the pallets to create at least one aisle depending on the size of your unit and the number of bins you are storing. Save space for items that don’t fit properly on pallets or will cause them to break, such as pieces of furniture. Disassemble what you can and store the pieces vertically using sheets for cover.
