If your loved one needs a new senior living arrangement, they have two different options available to them. The right choice depends on their needs and the lifestyle they’re looking for. Many facilities offer both independent and assisted living, so your relative can seamlessly transition as their needs change.

How to Choose Between the Two Styles of Senior Living

Independent Living

senior livingIndependent living is the less restrictive form of senior living. Your loved one can go on regular outings and socialize with people their age. They may live in a suite that has a living room and a kitchen. The facility provides laundry, transportation, housekeeping, and sometimes meal preparation services, so this is an ideal option for seniors who don’t need constant care but are having trouble managing some of the parts of living at home. This can also be a more economical option than living at home since many amenities are included.

Assisted Living

Assisted living is for seniors who need a little more help. Seniors in these units generally have a physical health problem like limited mobility or  cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer’s. There is staff available 24/7 to help with any issues. Assisted living units come in many shapes & sizes and differ significantly from nursing home care. Residents can live in apartments and can get assistance with many important daily tasks, like using the bathroom, showering, getting dressed, and scheduling doctor’s appointments. If your loved one has Alzheimer’s or dementia, assisted living facilities often have a separate memory care unit.

If you and your loved one are seeking a senior living solution, work with the Small Assisted Living Coalition.
