Leaky faucets are one of the most common household plumbing problems, staining your sinks and potentially wasting hundreds of gallons of water every year. Because these leaks can come from a variety of sources, repairing them can also be frustrating without the help of a licensed professional. Here are some of the most common reasons your faucets might be leaking.

What Are the Most Common Causes of Leaking Faucets?

1. Loose or Corroded O-Rings

plumbingThe handle of your faucet is held in place with a stem screw, which is sealed with a small round piece of rubber. This piece, called the O-ring, keeps water from escaping around the handle. Over time, these rings can dry out, deform, or break, causing them to leak.

2. Corroded Valve Seats

The valve seat connects the compression chamber of the faucet to the spout. A worn-out washer or built-up sediment inside the valve seat can make it impossible for the washer inside to fit snugly against the edges of the pipe. Fortunately, repairing a dirty or corroded valve seat is relatively simple from a plumbing professional.

3. Worn Washers

Washers create tight seals and keep water from flowing the wrong way. Even relatively simple plumbing fixtures feature several washers, each of which can cause a leak if they get worn or brittle. Replacing the washer will usually solve the problem right away, although it might take some time to find the right one.
