If you were asked what the most important part of corporate worship is, you might say the sermon or communion. However, at Knox, we believe it crucial not to discount the value of worship music. Music has the power to move a congregation in ways that words alone seldom can. Consider the following.

3 Reasons Why Music Is Important to Church

1. Biblical Importance

In the Christian faith, the Bible is valid and sacred, and is the template for forming services and the primary text for private or group studies. Religious music, a significant component of corporate worship here at Knox, is mentioned multiple times in the text, which is why it continues to be an important part of church events.

For example, Psalm 98:4–5 reads, “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise. Sing unto the Lord with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.” Psalm 40:3 speaks to another aspect of worship music—its power to spread Christian beliefs: “And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.”

2. Uniting the Congregation

worshipWhether distracted by restless kids, or feeling restrained by an unfamiliar pew occupant, there are times when you might find yourself passively experiencing the service. Instead of turning church into a long sequence of listening while sitting, standing and kneeling, the music at Knox allows the congregation to actively worship God in unison. It might even encourage you to share a hymnal with the stranger next to you or inspire your kids to stand up and sing along.

3. Furthering Religious Tradition

Some of the oldest stories in the world were passed down from civilization to civilization through song. But not just because the melodies were easier to remember—but because audiences are generally more receptive to readings when they’ve sung.

When you learn the songs in church, you can share them with your family at home, encouraging your kids to pass the tunes along to friends, and later, their children. In this way, music allows religious followers to spread their faith to their loved ones and beyond, turning church into a treasured tradition.

In Cincinnati, OH, Knox Presbyterian Church understands the impact of religious music. Each Sunday, they hold a traditional worship service at 10 a.m., as well as a more casual Fresh Spirit Worship service at 9:15 a.m. If you’re interested in raising your voice, stop by next week, and enjoy the service while the kids are in Sunday School.
