Pregnancy causes many changes in a woman’s body, including changes in her gums and teeth. If you’ve recently received the happy news that you’re expecting, learn some of the do’s and don’ts of oral health during pregnancy from the guide that follows. You should also schedule an examination with your dentist to get off to a healthy start.

Do:

Floss daily.

Prevent the buildup of plaque during pregnancy by flossing often. Many pregnant women experience swollen and bleeding gums due to a condition known as pregnancy gingivitis. Hormonal changes may make your gums more sensitive to inflammation. Bleeding gums during the second trimester is a common complaint of pregnant dentistry patients.

Increase your calcium intake.

Your developing baby needs calcium to grow properly. If you don’t take in enough calcium, your child may absorb it from your bones and teeth. While pregnant, consume plenty of dairy products, including milk, cheese, and yogurt, and consider taking a calcium supplement with your doctor’s approval.

dentistYour body also needs vitamin D to process calcium properly, so eat plenty of fatty fish and eggs along with nutritious servings of leafy green vegetables and fruits.

Don’t:

Schedule major dental procedures or surgery.

Try to avoid major surgeries or dental procedures during pregnancy. Regular cleanings and annual exams are safe and recommended. Any emergency dental services, such as crowns and fillings, should be performed to protect your health. However, postpone any elective dental work until after the birth. If you have questions about which procedures are safe, consult your dentist

Brush your teeth immediately after morning sickness.

The repeated exposure of teeth to stomach acid from morning sickness is concerning. However, avoid brushing your teeth immediately after vomiting. The bristles from a toothbrush may scratch enamel when acid is present. Instead, rinse your mouth with water and fluoridated mouthwash, or apply a bit of fluoridated toothpaste to your teeth with your finger. You can brush your teeth an hour after vomiting without risk to your enamel.
