Your sewer lines are an integral part of disposing of household waste. If they become clogged, it can lead to heavy damage and costly repairs. Fortunately, there are signs leading up to sewer stoppage that you can learn to recognize. Here are a few troubling indicators to keep in mind.

How to Tell If You’re at Risk for Sewer Stoppage

1. Backups

If your toilets, shower, and sinks are all having issues, a clog may be to blame. As each backup occurs, it’s easy to chalk it up to an isolated incident.

However, when multiple fixtures are having problems, it’s a clear indication of a clog in the sewer line that connects them all. If you’re experiencing frequent backups in multiple areas of your home, you’ll need a plumber to come and assess the problem.

2. Overflowing Water

Sewer StoppageWhen there’s a clog, water that can’t move through the sewer line will overflow into other fixtures. A simple way to test for this is to flush the toilet. Do you hear gurgling or see water coming up from the shower drain?

Turn on your bathroom sink. If you see the toilet water rise or bubble, there’s a problem. Any indication that these fixtures are connected points to a problem that needs to be promptly addressed.

3. Drainage Issues

The sewer clean-out is a pipe that connects to your home’s main sewer line. In the event of sewer stoppage, this line gives the plumber direct access. Sewer clean-outs are typically located outside the home, though they may also be found in the basement. They are marked by a round or rectangular cap. Older homes may not have one.

If your home does have a sewer clean-out, lift the cap and take a look. If you can see standing water or water coming out of the pipe, you’ll need to shut off your home’s water and contact a plumber to handle the clog.
