Brushing at least twice a day is essential for maintaining a healthy smile. However, an improper brushing technique could do more harm than good. One of the most common issues that dentists see is brushing too hard. While scrubbing your teeth vigorously from top to bottom may feel like the best way to eliminate plaque, doing so can also wear down the enamel. Here’s what you should know about heavy brushing.

Signs You’re Brushing Too Hard

Enamel may be the hardest substance in the body, but it wasn't made to withstand powerful brushing day after day. As it starts to erode, you may notice your teeth becoming increasingly more sensitive, especially when they come in contact with extreme temperatures. Discoloration is also common among those who brush too hard because the dentin that lies just beneath the enamel has a yellow tint.

Consequences of Brushing Too Hard

dentistWithout a sufficient layer of enamel protecting them, your teeth are especially vulnerable to decay. Therefore, brushing too hard could result in extensive cavities. In severe cases, it can also contribute to tooth loss.

Brushing too hard can also push back the gums. If your teeth appear longer than usual, it’s because your gums are receding. This exposes your teeth’s roots. Without the tissue supporting them, they may eventually loosen and fall out if conditions grows severe enough.

Strategies for Brushing Better

Your dentist will be happy to show you proper brushing techniques. To start, use a soft-bristled brush and set a timer for two minutes. After applying a dab of toothpaste, gently scrape the brush up and down in tight circles on all three surfaces of each tooth, making sure to address the gum line. Flossing will help you get to the areas between your teeth. Your brush’s bristles should reach 2 to 3 millimeters under the gum line every time they brush. You can do this by tilting the brush at a 45-degree angle when targeting the top of each tooth.
