The Americans With Disabilities Act outlines regulations to make all spaces accessible for those with disabilities. As a business owner, compliance is your responsibility to ensure all employees and customers feel comfortable while on the property, which includes the parking lot. Here are some of the rules to keep in mind when scheduling parking lot painting and refreshment.

4 ADA Regulations for Parking Lots

1. Location

Before designating spaces for handicapped usage, find the quickest path to the entrance or the nearest pedestrian walkway. These spaces must have the shortest accessible route to the entrance. If there are multiple entrances, pavement markings must be made at each one.

2. Clear Signage

Handicapped parking signs must use the international symbol of accessibility and be placed at a height of at least 60 inches above the ground to clearly indicate where the spaces are. The sign must have additional text or another sign below to indicate a van-accessible space.

3. Size of Spaces

Parking Lot PaintingStandard vehicle spaces must be at least eight feet wide with a five-foot adjacent access aisle. For van spots, the space is also eight feet wide, but the adjacent aisle is expanded to eight feet wide. The boundary of these access aisles needs to be clearly marked with either a curved or square shape.

4. Number of Spaced Needed

The required number of handicapped-accessible spaces depends on the total available. For any lot with up to 25 parking spaces, you must have at least one accessible and one van-accessible. These numbers increase with the parking lot size.
