A garbage disposal is a convenient add-on for the kitchen that makes discarding certain items much easier. However, for any home with a septic tank rather than a municipal septic system, it can also lead to trouble if not used correctly. Use the following do’s and don’ts to keep both systems in good shape.

Do:

Exercise restraint.

If you have a septic tank, you can still use a garbage disposal. Just keep in mind that the more you use it, the higher the chances are of a system failure. Having too much solid matter in the tank diminishes its ability to accept more waste and break it down efficiently. Always use the disposal in moderation.

Use cold water.

When you do use the garbage disposal, always run cold water down the drain. The cold water helps coagulate fats, which allows the disposal blades to grind them up so they don’t stick to the pipes and cause clogs. The running water also helps push the ground-up scraps down the pipes and into the septic tank safely.

Don’t:

Septic TankPut off septic tank pumping.

For any home that uses a garbage disposal with a septic system, pumping is needed more often. Since the extra food scraps don’t break down easily, they build up in the tank. When its capacity is reached, the system can back up into your home. Regular pumping will remove the excess solids, so follow your contractor’s recommended schedule to keep the system operating efficiently.

Put just anything into the disposal.

Garbage disposals aren’t designed to be a substitute for a trash can, so you should only put small food scraps in there. Never put non-food items, grease or oil, or fibrous foods in it. All of these items increase the likelihood of a clog.
