Most people never think about their electrical outlets until they malfunction. However, keeping the outlets free of dust and grime is essential to their proper functioning. Protect yourself and your electrical wiring by using proper cleaning techniques.

How Do You Clean an Electrical Outlet?

1. Turn Electricity Off

The first step in any electrical wiring maintenance is to turn off the power at the fuse box. This protects against electrocution during the cleaning process.

2. Remove & Clean Covers

3. Clean the Plug Sockets

Next, use a soft cloth or paper towel sprayed lightly with a non-abrasive liquid cleaner to clean the sockets gently. Don’t spray cleaner directly into the plug holes or onto the electrical wiring, and avoid getting excess cleanser from the cloth into the holes. Let the socket air dry for 30 minutes before moving to the next step.

4. Replace Covers

When all the components have dried, replace the covers and screws. This is a great time to replace cracked or discolored covers with new installations. If you have small children, also consider self-closing outlet covers. As the last step, turn the electricity back on at your fuse box.
