While everyone appreciates their air conditioner, not many people know how it works. With regular AC maintenance, this system keeps your home and office comfortable by regulating the temperature. Learn more about the key parts of your air conditioning system and how they all work together to keep you cool.

The Main Parts of an AC System

The key components of your air conditioning systems are the condenser, evaporator, and compressor. The condenser and compressor function within the outdoor system, while the evaporator is inside. The ductwork circulates air from the indoor unit to the various rooms throughout the house.

Refrigerant is the lifeblood of the system. The chemical converts from gas to liquid and back again, which allows your AC system to cool your home.

A Guide to the Cooling Process

AC maintenanceYour AC extracts heat from the air to bring the temperature down to a designated setting. First, the compressor condenses and circulates the refrigerant through the outdoor unit, converting it from a gas to a liquid. This liquid is then pushed through the indoor evaporator coil. The indoor unit fan circulates the inside air to pass across the evaporator.

Next, the evaporator exchanges this thermal energy with the surrounding air. The liquid refrigerant then turns into gas, removing the heat from the air. The cooled air is blown back into the house through the ductwork.

Finally, the condenser in the outdoor unit turns the refrigerant vapor back into a liquid, removing all heat. When the refrigerant leaves the evaporator, it will be a cool gas, which eventually returns to the condenser to begin this process again.
