Checking the oil in your vehicle is intimidating if you don’t know much about cars. However, the process is relatively easy and is a reliable indicator of when you should take your vehicle to an auto mechanic for an oil change. Keeping enough oil in your car is crucial because it lubricates the internal moving parts, preventing them from wearing down. Here are four steps to checking your oil.
How to Check Your Oil Without an Auto Mechanic
1. Prepare Car
To prevent a false reading while checking your oil, you must park on level ground. Also, check your oil once your car has been off for at least 10 minutes. Waiting until the car cools down will prevent burns from the hot engine parts.
2. Locate Dipstick
Your vehicle’s dipstick may be located in several different areas, depending on the make and model. The dipstick will typically be in the back of the engine if you have a rear-wheel drive car. If you have a front-wheel drive, you will find the dipstick towards the front of the vehicle. If you cannot find it, read through your vehicle owner's manual to determine the location.
3.Test Dipstick Level
Using a clean and lint-free rag, pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean. Then, place it back into the tube and pull it back out. Oil should now coat it. Each dipstick is marked with a range, letting you know if the oil is low or at a safe level. Once you’ve located where your oil is at, place the stick back into the tubing again.
4. Assess Level
If your oil is at a safe and acceptable level, you shouldn’t worry about adding or changing the oil. However, if your oil looks dirty or low, bring the car to an auto mechanic right away. Driving with low oil damages the engine, so you should take action quickly. A mechanic will replace the oil and get it to a safe driving level.
