A UTI, or urinary tract infection, occurs when bacteria get into the urine and infect the urinary system. Most women will have one UTI at some point in their lives. Because they’re so common, all women should know what causes these infections and how their gynecologist will treat them.

What to Know About UTIs

How Do They Develop?

When bacteria get into the urine, they can travel from your urethra to your bladder. Symptoms of infection include vaginal discharge, frequent and painful urination, discomfort in the lower abdomen, and blood in the urine. Some infections may affect the kidneys. The symptoms associated with acute pyelonephritis—inflammation of the kidneys due to bacterial infection—include nausea, vomiting, chills, high fever, and pain.

Who Is Prone to Them?

UTIs are more common among women than men because of the shorter length and location of their urethras. Bacteria from the vagina and rectum may infect a woman’s urine.

Women with health problems that affect the immune system, such as diabetes, also have a higher risk of developing the condition.

How Are They Treated?

Most UTIs can be easily treated by a gynecologist. They’ll diagnose it by analyzing a urine sample. A round of antibiotic medication—usually three days—will treat simple infections. Your doctor will recommend that you increase your intake of fluids to flush out your system. When the kidneys have been infected, a longer course of antibiotics administered by IV may be necessary.
