During the fall and winter, adults worry about contracting the flu virus. However, for parents of premature infants, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a much more pressing concern. This virus infects the lungs and respiratory tract and can be debilitating for anyone with a weakened immune system. If you’re hoping to learn more about this pediatric care issue, consider the following guide.

A Pediatric Care Guide to Respiratory Syncytial Virus

What Are the Symptoms?

Within four to six days of exposure to RSV, a premature infant’s symptoms will prove much more intense than those of an adult or older child with the same infection. You may notice them coughing and having trouble feeding and breathing. With each quick and shallow breath, their chest will seem to pull painfully inward. They may also be lethargic and irritable.

What Causes It?

pediatric careWhen someone infected with RSV coughs or sneezes, the infection travels through the air on drops of fluid. If these droplets enter your premature infant’s respiratory system—through the mouth, nose, or eyes—they’ll develop RSV. They may also catch the virus if an infected person holds or touches them.

How to Prevent It

Since there is no quick fix for RSV, you must protect your infant from the virus in the first place. Keep your baby away from anyone who isn’t feeling well, especially if they’re coughing or sneezing. In adults, the symptoms of RSV mimic a mild common cold. Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer every couple of hours, and clean surfaces and toys with a germ-killing solution. Avoid smoking, as premature infants exposed to tobacco smoke are more at risk of developing RSV.
