Bed bugs are among the most challenging pests to eradicate without professional treatment. Not only do they hide in bedding and linens, but their tiny, nearly-translucent eggs are also difficult to see without a magnifying glass. If you recently scheduled bed bug removal services, prepare for treatment to help ensure these pests don’t come back.

Do:

Clean the affected rooms.

You should vacuum and wash all flooring, mattresses, and upholstered furniture in the rooms affected with bedbugs. Take the vacuum bag out as soon as you finish, seal it in a plastic bag, and throw it away to avoid re-introducing the insects to your home.

Launder all bedding, towels, and bed bug treatmentclothes in affected rooms as well. Use the hottest setting on your washer and dryer, as heat kills bed bugs. Place clothing and linens in thick plastic bags to keep them separate from the infestation, and clear away any other clutter so exterminators can easily navigate your home.

Inspect non-washable items.

Examine decorations, toys, books, picture frames, electronics, and other non-washable items thoroughly and throw away anything you think is affected. Place everything else in durable plastic bags and sealable plastic bins to separate them from infested areas and protect them from pesticides. Keep these items as well as all clothing, bedding, and other linens in their bags and boxes for at least two weeks after treatment to smother any remaining bugs.

Don’t:

Move items to another location before treatment.

Refrain from moving items in infested rooms to your garage, storage unit, a friend or family member’s home, or anywhere else before bed bug removal experts arrive. It risks spreading the infestation. Make temporary living arrangements for your pets, so they don’t contact bed bug treatment chemicals.

Wash the floors for at least three weeks.

Refrain from shampooing carpets and other floorings for at least three weeks after bed bug removal services to avoid rinsing the pesticide away. If you still have problems after three weeks, contact your bed bug removal service.
