3 Ways to Prevent Toenail Fungus, Norwich, Connecticut

A fungal nail can be embarrassing and painful. Fungi are difficult to get rid of, and when untreated, may spread and destroy toenails. Prevention begins with proper nail care, so use the following tips to keep your nails healthy.

How to Prevent Toenail Fungus

1. Wear the Right Shoes

fungal nailIf you cram your feet into too-small shoes or walk around in an oversized pair, you’re likely weakening your toenail structure. This makes them more susceptible to fungus. You can avoid fungal nail by investing in the right footwear. Shoes should be snug, though not touching your toenails. Make sure there is proper arch support, and discuss custom insoles with a podiatrist if you’re having trouble finding the right fit.

2. Wear Shoes in Public Areas

One of the easiest ways to contract toenail fungus is by walking around public pools, locker rooms, and showers in your bare feet. Fungi thrive in these environments and can easily transfer to your feet. Purchase a pair of cheap flip-flops you can store in your gym or pool locker.

3. Cut Nails Correctly

You should cut your toenails often and follow best practices so you don’t develop a fungal nail. Make sure to sterilize your clippers by wiping them with a moist towel after each use and drying them immediately. Additionally, never share them with someone else. Clip your nails straight across and use a nail file to remove sharp edges. You can sprinkle an anti-fungal powder on after for optimal protection.
