Okay Denver, you did it again. You just bypassed fall and launched us straight into winter. I know, I know, we are excited about the upcoming ski season but… too soon? Yeah, I think you started the slow clap a little early this time but here we are. Since Denver weather decides to do what it wants, it looks like it might be a good time to talk roofing and how you can prepare your Denver home for the fall and winter months.

1 Clean Your Gutters

  •  This may be early advice as the trees have yet to shed their leaves but, be sure to clean your gutters. Some of the most severe roof damage we see on Denver homes starts at the gutter line with an ice dam. Keeping your gutter troughs and downspouts free of debris will help prevent ice build-up and more severe problems down the road.

2 Clear off Debris

  • As we approach the winter months you want to be sure your roof is clear of debris. If you feel comfortable on your roof, use a broom or blower to clear debris. The most vulnerable areas are going to be the valleys and low slope areas. Please remember: safety first! If you are not comfortable on your roof please reach out to a professional to take care of this for you.

3 Look for Damage and Deterioration

  • Now that your roof and gutters are clear of debris, it is time to scan the roof for any visual damage. You want to look for loose shingles, exposed nail heads or frayed edges. If you see a large amount of granulates in the gutter trough, you may want to start thinking about a replacement.  If you're not comfortable getting on the roof and would still like to examine the structure, don’t sweat it.  You now get to blow the dust off that pair of binoculars you picked up at that garage sale that your spouse said you were never going to use! “Honey, I’m going to get into birding” Fast forward 5 years. “I told you we needed these. I can now inspect our roof for damage and I don’t even need to get on a  ladder.” Alternatively,  you can give Formula Roofing a call for a free assessment… but that should not hold you back from busting out those binoculars anyway!
