Whenever you bring your dog to a pet boarding facility, you'll likely be asked whether they have any symptoms of kennel cough and if they’ve received a vaccine for the illness. Kennel cough is a highly contagious illness that spreads quickly among dogs, and although it’s not fatal to most, it can cause extreme discomfort for several weeks.

What Is Kennel Cough?

Kennel cough, also commonly known as Bordetella, is an upper respiratory infection in dogs caused by both a virus and bacteria. When dogs are infected by a virus (usually a variation of influenza), it weakens their immune systems, allowing the bacteria (usually Bordetella Bronchiseptica) to take hold.

Together, they affect the dog’s windpipe, larynx, and lungs, causing a dry, hacking cough. Dogs may also be lethargic, have a fever, and nasal discharge. In most cases, the symptoms only last about three weeks with treatment, but the illness can be fatal to young puppies and geriatric dogs. If your pet shows any signs of kennel cough, it’s essential to see a vet right away

How Does Kennel Cough Spread?

pet boardingWhile direct contact with infected dogs (who may not yet be showing symptoms) and contaminated objects like toys, beds, and water dishes will spread the disease, it’s most commonly spread through the air. Whenever an infected dog barks, coughs, or sheds dander, it can spread contaminants, which can survive up to two weeks in the air. It can take up to two weeks for a dog to show symptoms of the illness, during which time they can spread the virus, and they can remain contagious for several weeks after treatment.

How Can Kennel Cough Be Prevented?

The best way for dog owners to prevent kennel cough is to have their dogs vaccinated for Bordetella. In fact, most pet boarding facilities and dog day cares require this vaccine for clients. It will not completely prevent the disease, but it does reduce the severity and the amount of time your pet is contagious.

Isolating your dog if they show symptoms of kennel cough and seeking treatment are also important. Choosing a kennel that follows strict disinfection protocols, including using an air-purification system, is also important to keeping your dog safe and healthy.
