Your children’s dental health affects their overall health, so when something is wrong with their teeth, it can be a cause for concern. Dental fluorosis is a condition that can seem frightening, but it’s perfectly treatable by a family dentist. Below is a guide to the condition, so you can put your mind at ease and understand what to expect at the family dentist appointment.

Causes & Symptoms

Dental fluorosis is caused by your child ingesting too much fluoride when the teeth are still forming in their gums, up until the age of eight. This happens when children consume fluoridated products too often, such as fluoridated water or juices and shellfish. Most cases are generally mild and just result in white streaks and patches on their teeth. This creates a mild cosmetic concern but otherwise not a reason to worry. Less mild cases are very rare, according to the CDC, but they can cause changes in the appearance of the tooth, such as pits, discoloration, and roughness.

Treatment & Prevention

family dentistBecause fluorosis isn’t harmful, only rare and severe cases are treated. This treatment usually consists of cosmetic dentistry approaches to improve their appearance. They can include whitening treatments to target the brown or black spots, or hiding the appearance through resin bonding, veneers, or crowns.

Prevention consists of monitoring fluoride intake, and your family dentist can give you guidance on how much fluoride your child should be ingesting. When they’re an infant, breastfeed if you can, and if you use formula, use one low in fluoride. Once they’re old enough to need teeth cleaning, don’t use too much toothpaste and make sure they don’t swallow it. They should avoid fluoride mouthwashes until they’re at least five or six, as they’re still at high risk for swallowing it. Don’t give them fluoride supplements unless specifically advised to by their health professionals.
