With fall in full swing, days are quickly getting shorter and nights are becoming colder. A well-oiled and fully functioning furnace will be essential to keeping your home and family comfortable through the late fall and winter ahead. Take some time to prepare your system now.

Autumn Maintenance Checklist for Furnaces

1. Schedule a Tune-Up

Heating contractors should come in annually to tune up your system. During this appointment, they will inspect and clean the vital systems such as the heat exchanger, blower components, burner, electrical connections, and the flue. They’ll take pressure readings to find any leaks, replace your furnace filter, and lubricate the moving parts. They’ll ensure your system is working as efficiently as possible while locating any potential problems and addressing them.

2. Upgrade Your Thermostat

Replace the batteries in your thermostat so it won’t die during the season. If your thermostat is outdated, now is the time to upgrade to a programmable or smart thermostat. Set it for 68 degrees Fahrenheit when people are home, and lower the temperature to between 62 and 66 degrees when everyone is gone or sleeping.

3. Clean & Clear Vents

If there’s stubborn grime, scrub them with warm, soapy water. Move furniture and other items as needed to give each vent at least six inches of space. The vents should have a clear path to the main area of the room for easy airflow.
