You rely on your residential HVAC system to keep you comfortable year-round. Like any other device, however, it may suffer unexpected technical problems occasionally. It helps to understand exactly how the unit works so that you can provide your air conditioning contractor with a detailed idea of the issue. Here’s what you should know.

How HVAC Systems Function

1. Heat Absorption Occurs

The first step occurs when indoor heat is extracted through a vent and blown over an evaporator coil. This component is designed to absorb the heat using refrigerant to cool it down. As this air passes through the system, the refrigerant transforms from liquid to gas and moves through the looping system into the compressor.

2. Refrigerant Temperature Rises

3. Condenser Pumps Refrigerant

At this point, the high-pressure gas has converted into a heated vapor form. As it approaches the condenser, situated in the outdoor unit, it’s exposed to the air outside. As the two come into contact, the exterior air soaks up the refrigerant’s heat and reduces its temperature. As that happens, it reverts from its gaseous state to a liquid once again.

4. Cooled Refrigerant Travels

The cooled down refrigerant is now ready to cool down the house. It returns to the evaporator coils inside the home, only to begin the cycle all over again. This occurs continuously until the indoor temperature reaches the desired temperature set on your thermostat. The system then stops cycling.

5. Vents Deliver Air

The cooled air travels through ducts and emerges from the vents located throughout your home. For those that aren’t situated on the ceiling, it’s important to prevent them from blockage. Always keep furniture and rugs away from them, as it could impact the residential HVAC system’s efficiency.
