Vehicle storage allows you to protect your property at a secure location for prolonged periods. If you are using this solution for more than a few weeks, there are some steps you need to take to keep your car safe. Whether yours is a classic car reserved for special occasions or you're going abroad for a semester, follow these tips to protect your vehicle in storage.

Do:

Maintain your insurance coverage.

Canceling your car insurance for a certain period may result in higher premiums when you reactivate your policy. If your car is leased, you may also not be allowed to have a lapse in insurance. You may qualify for a coverage discount while the car is in storage, so let your provider know that you won’t be using the vehicle.

Keep it covered.

If your unit is enclosed, you may not need to protect it from inclement weather, but a tarp will still be helpful for preventing dust accumulation. Additionally, wax and wash the vehicle before parking it to remove any grime that could harden over time.

Don't:

Leave old oil in.

When a vehicle sits for a prolonged period, sediments will build up in the engine oil, which could cause damage to the motor. To prevent this, change the oil right before storing the vehicle to keep it clean. This will also keep the engine lubricated to prevent corrosion.

Forget to check the tire pressure.

Tires naturally lose pressure over time, especially over the winter. Since your car will be sitting without use, some parts of the tire could become flat. To reduce this risk, ensure the pressure is at the recommended level. If the parking spot is on soft ground, like grass, place a plastic sheet underneath the vehicle to reduce sinking and protect the tires from the soil. You can also remove the wheels entirely and leave the vehicle on jack stands until it's time to drive it again.
