If you just got your first dentures, your dentist will probably advise you on what to eat for the first few weeks as you adjust. Even once you’re comfortable with your unit, there are special precautions you should take to prevent common issues like bad breath or denture damage. To help keep you comfortable and maximize the lifespan of your new set, here are a few tips to follow.

Do:

Cut up foods.

Extensive chewing may wear down your dentures and cause discomfort, especially if they aren’t a good fit. Cut your foods into bite-sized pieces before you put them in your mouth. This will minimize the amount of chewing that you need to do, prolonging the lifespan of your oral appliance.

Clean them.

Cosmetic dentures are just like real teeth in that they can get food stuck in them. Set up a dental hygiene regimen to prevent bad breath. Remove the set each day and brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a specialized solution. Brush your gums, tongue, and any remaining teeth as well. Don’t forget to soak the unit overnight to prevent dryness.

Don’t:

Eat overly hard or chewy foods.dentures

Some foods can damage your dentures or slip underneath them to irritate your gums. Popcorn, nuts, and seeds should be avoided. Chewy foods like taffy and peanut butter can also stick to the false teeth and cause discomfort.

Bite with the front teeth.

Biting down with your front teeth puts unnecessary strain on them, which could dislodge the dentures in your mouth. If you need to chew on a piece of steak, cut it up first and bite with your canines or molars. Try to switch from side to side periodically, which will put even pressure on the teeth and help them last longer.
