Major depressive disorder, or what’s more commonly called depression, is characterized by feelings of emptiness, worthlessness, and hopelessness. Symptoms might also include changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, and angry outbursts. Since depression isn't the only condition that causes such issues, though, it’s important to seek an accurate diagnosis if you’ve been feeling down lately. Whereas it may be possible to treat mild to moderate depression without prescription drugs, the following conditions require medical intervention.

What Issues Share Symptoms With Depression?

1. Bipolar Disorder

Because bipolar disorder includes periods of depression, it’s easy to mistake it for major depressive disorder. However, bipolar disorder also includes periods of intense high, or mania. It’s usually these periodic manic episodes that allow health care providers to distinguish between the two.

2. Type 2 Diabetes

depressionUntreated diabetes can leave you feeling tired and irritable. It can also cause weight loss, which is characteristic of depression. And since there’s actually a link between insulin resistance and depression, those with untreated diabetes could indeed have all the other symptoms of major depressive disorder. If they only treat the depression and overlook the diabetes, though, they won't achieve the relief they need.

3. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

If you experience depression symptoms at around the same time every month—generally a week before menstruation—you may have premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Caused by changes in hormone levels, this condition mimics depression, but only for about one week every month. Treatment options for PMDD include birth control pills, antidepressants, over-the-counter pain relievers, and stress management.
