1. Living History Sites

New England is rich in history, and an excellent way to teach kids about early American life is by visiting these two locations:

  • Old Sturbridge Village: located in Sturbridge, MA, this interactive village depicts life in the early 1830s. It’s complete with homes, community buildings, and a school. Kids get hands-on with farming, school lessons, and a mock court case. Curriculum resources are available for teachers for pre- and post-visit.
  • Plimoth Plantationlocated in Plymouth, MA, this living history site features replicas of 17th-century homes and a Wampanoag Homesite that educates visitors about Native American life at the time of the Plymouth landing. 2. Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center

This Connecticut museum, located in Mashantucket, offers insight into the customs, lives, and history of the Native Tribes of the Northeast. Part of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, the facility features libraries, classrooms, exhibits, and galleries. Teachers can request specific programs, such as exploring life of a Pequot child in the 16th century. Guided tours are also available.

3. Roger Williams Zoo

This nationally acclaimed zoo, located in Providence, RI, opened in 1872 and is one of the oldest in the country. This zoo has a conservation focus and participates in the Species Survival Plan Program. Kids will delight in over 100 different animal species, including a rare red panda, African elephants, and other exotic animals such as giant anteaters and a binturong. The zoo accommodates group visits and school trips and has educational programs for students from pre-k – 12. 

4. Science Museums

Consider Boston’s Museum of Science, which has hundreds of interactive exhibits. The Woods Hole Science Aquarium, in Falmouth, MA, features marine animals from the Atlantic. The Yale Peabody Museum of Natural Historyin New Haven, has a Great Hall of Dinosaurs. The Biomes Marine Biology Centerin North Kingstown, RI, features hands-on animal programs.
