Bringing your pets along while trick-or-treating involves them in the holiday fun. They’ll face a few threats, however, so be mindful of their safety. Find essential pet care tips to ensure they get to enjoy their time out of the house on Halloween night in the guide that follows.

How to Keep Your Pet Safe on Halloween

1. Keep Them on a Leash

Your pet should always be at your side and on a leash. If not, they may dart after rodents or run into dark roads where passing cars can’t see them. You don’t want to spend Halloween driving around trying to locate a lost dog.

2. Avoid Candy

pet careYour pet will show plenty of interest in your child’s haul of candy, but you should take steps to prevent them from eating any of it. High-sugar candies like candy corn can cause diarrhea. If they eat candy wrappers and foils, they may face gastrointestinal problems. Chocolate is toxic to dogs, and they may choke on hard candy or toffee. Make sure your children know not to give your dog any of their Halloween treats.

3. Watch Out for Other Pets

Dogs and other pets can be territorial. When you’re approaching a house, have an adult keep your dog at the curb. Otherwise, the homeowner’s pet may become combative or bolt out the door. Although these confrontations are usually harmless, don’t risk injury.
